Today in the lab I mostly wasted time. I should be doing real work for my research; however, I did work on my abstract and poster for Friday. Tomorrow we're going in the field to check flowerpots for nests. There's really no hope for them, but negative data is still data. Or so Bernie says. I say it's crap! Jon changed the Life and Teachings of Christ class to tomorrow night, so I don't have anything to do tonight except take it easy.

I have been working on this environmental education grant for rural schools involving fish. Bernie started this educational outreach program years ago called "The Traveling Fish Show" where he travels to schools and presents information and takes fish specimens for the kids. Heath and I want to enhance the program to include more classes per year and better materials. The idea is really good and Bernie liked it. The deadline isn't until April of next year, but it has a good chance of getting funded. Sort of exciting.

Masculinity... hmm?

It was so great to worship God today! I had trouble holding back tears most of the service. He's so good
! Woohoo!

Last night Erin, Jessica and I (maybe other people too) were going to see a movie @ 7:30. Well, we should have picked the 6:50 showing or something. Jessica had a wreck and had the entire bridge blocked. Thankfully she was pretty much fine except for a broken ankle. I got on the scene as they were putting on the board thingy. I was really scared to see her but ran over to her when she saw me. She was sort of shaken up (understandably) but said she was okay. Erin, Amanda and I went to the hospital and stayed until she was discharged around 10:00. These sorts of things make me realize the awesomeness of friendship and having Christian friends. Thank goodness Jessica is okay!

We've sort of resolved the Atlanta trip issue. Erin and Amanda also have to leave later on Friday so we will probably drive to the hotel Friday night so as not to blow the entire $60 fee for the trip. We're supposed to go to the Cahaba this week to get some of my fish (the imperiled one that I wrote the article on), so it should be fun. Then the first week in August we're in the field probably every day (long days too) to do Heath's project on the dam removal on the Cahaba. Yipee!

Out,

Today was...okay. I finally moved on to the next phase of lab work for my research and finished most of my research poster for next Friday. I have to say, it looks pretty awesome. How do you make yourself not like someone you have feelings for? I wonder if that is even possible? Regardless, I've got to find out how. I wish I didn't let this happen to me! Grrrrr. Heath gives his presentation for the Hughes interns tomorrow and he is nowhere near prepared. I really wish he would step up to the plate on this. I'd like to see him do a good job. Oh, well. I also found out that the poster presentation next Friday is from noon until 2:00. That's well after the time the college group will have left. Just great. What to do? I was feeling so weird and I decided to walk around outside this afternoon. It really did help, but now I'm back inside. Yeehaw.

Well, after a bit of a overload last night, I'm feeling okay this morning. I may be able to move on to the next step in my lab work, which is good; and I may be able to get the data I need for the poster coming up. I still don't know how I'm going to work out going to Atlanta. We're supposed to be at the church building at 1:00, but the poster session begins at 12:00. There's no way it will be over before one and that leaves no time for me to get to the building. Argh. But that's just a little problem. No big deal. I'll make it.

Heath and I went out in the field again today to get two different species that we are studying. It was tough going at first and we almost gave up; but then we began to get one or two of Heath's fish and eventually got 6. Fewer than he needed; but we didn't have anymore time to waste. My madtoms apparently refuse to nest in the nice little clay flowerpots that I've provided for them. I really would like to find some nests for my project. I'm also still behind in lab work, but I may be able to catch up by the end of this week. However, we have to finish and print our posters next week, so I may not be able to get my needed data by then. Grrr. I'm still mad at myself for various reasons.

On a brighter note, the reprints of my article came in today and I've sent out a few to some scientists. It's cool to see my name in print. Maybe it will have some effect.

Anyway, I'm going to stay late here in the lab to get as much done as I can. Fun, fun.

Today Bernie, Heath and I went to Pinson to get some pretty little fish for a grad student's (Jenjit) research. We then moseyed over to a proposed subdivision site where there are some imperiled darters. We previously found these protected species on the property and made the Jefferson Co. Land Committee aware of the fish. They responded by forcing the developer to provide a 100 ft "buffer" zone of vegetation on the main stream and 5 other such protective measures. Apparently there is another stream (or, alternatively, the first stream runs more extensively) through the property. The developer (and his environmental cosultants) assured us that there were none of the protected fish in this part. Of course we didn't take their word for it! While we found no fish in the runoff under the road, we walked upstream and found a larger stream; and in one seine haul we got 6 of the imperiled little guys. So much for "environmental" consultants. It's possible that the 100 ft. buffer around the stream will prevent the developer from even building (or at least will severely limit the number of houses). Woohoo! So, I'm tired after a day in the heat catching fish; but soon off to "Life and Teachings of Christ" class after a quick shower @ home.

Bernie got elected to the Board of Governors for the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. More crap for him to do. And I'm still behind in research. Field trips are certainly fun, but they take away from some important lab work. Oh well.

Worship this morning was great! I've been really...emotional lately. Not just in worship, but mainly then. Anyway, I've decided to re-try this LiveJournal thing. I've been reading "The Cultural Church" by F. LaGard Smith and have enjoyed it. He seems sincere and puts words to some things about the church that I've been thinking for some time. I have a hard time trusting God. On an intellectual level I may know that He has promised to provide; but it doesn't often translate into peace on my part. Lack of faith, I suppose. Something I need to work on. When I fall for someone, boy do I go down hard. Something else I need to work on. Don't want to become...withdrawn...hardened. But I don't want to invest so much of myself in hopeless, fanciful relationships. Grrrr. Sorry, God. You've got me. I know. I guess I'll go in to do some work this afternoon before evening worship. I am sooooo behind!
